The interesting thing about when the day job – turns into the day, evening, and weekend job for a while, it makes you think. I began to really consider time and how I use it. At the end of this last 3+ month work project, I shifted to just sketching or doodling during meetings. Most of my creativity was poured into the project and the push to the due date.
Last week I doodled a halloween idea on my notes, I really wanted to do something for halloween to mark the day. I started with simply sketching the pumpkin and adding a light wash.
Every pumpkin needs a cat, and every cat needs a focus to pounce on. But, back to the original sketch and plan. If I sketched before work, during meetings, and while eating dinner and a bit after, I just might just get something completed in time for a post.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning how to dance in the rain.”
―Vivien Greene
And I did! I liked the pencil sketch and added a bit of colour. Drawing the character added more time, (all pumpkins might have been faster) but it was also really fun while working on the entire piece. I learned that focusing on what you CAN do and not on what you CAN’T do, really is truly valuable, energizing, and productive in many ways.
Where your focus goes, your energy flows.

Not all halloween experiences are spooky, and some are pretty great. Hope yours is as well! Happy Halloween!
